Avoid Common Credit Damaging
Mistakes
Using credit can be a risky thing to do. This is especially
true for people that have little or no experience with
using credit. It only takes a few slip-ups in order to
hurt your credit. Once your credit is hurt, it can take
months and even years to clean it up. Avoiding some of
the most common credit mistakes will help to make sure
that you never have to worry about repairing your credit
from damages.
One
of the most common credit mistakes that nearly everyone
makes at some point is paying only the minimum due. This hurts
because you are paying more towards the interest than you are
on the actual balance. Paying only the minimum due keeps your
balance high. In addition, it can takes years to pay off a
credit card by only paying the minimum balance.
Many
people use credit as a substitute for cash. Charging
more than you can afford to pay is setting yourself up for
failure. Doing this causes your debt load to continue to increase
as you struggle to make payments. When you have to struggle
to pay credit card debt there is a great chance that you will
miss a payment causing the situation to worsen. Once you make
a late payment, your minimum balance increases. You have to
pay this in addition to the late fee. If you were struggling
before you make payments, you will end up struggling worse
and perhaps falling behind by months.
There are those who choose to ignore credit problems when
they start to arise. Adopting an out of sight out of
mind way
of thinking causes credit problems to become worse as time
passes. The later you become on your credit cards, the worse
the debts will become. Many credit card companies report the
credit card as charged off after six months of nonpayment.
Unless you are able to negotiate something with the creditor
to have the charge off removed, it will remain on your credit
report for seven years even after you’ve paid the account in
full.
If you begin to experience financial hardship inform the credit
card company as quickly as possible. Being proactive and making
payment arrangements will often prevent a negative report to
credit bureaus.
Report a change of address as quickly as possible to make
sure that you continue to receive your bills in a timely manner.
If you fail to report an address change, you might not receive
your credit card bill, which will, in turn, cause a late payment.
Taking
out cash advances can be costly if the advance is not repaid
quickly. The interest rate on a cash advance is higher
and fees for the cash advance. Your minimum payment will continue
to increase until the cash advance has been repaid. Avoid taking
out cash advances. If you are in a crunch and need cash, repay
the advance as soon as possible to avoid getting into a stressed
situation.
Having too
many credit cards can end up hurting you. The more
credit you have the more you will be tempted to spend. It’s
hard to resist spending when you have such a high amount of
purchasing power. The problem comes from charging more than
you are able to repay. If you have good credit, creditors will
be willing to extend credit and raise your credit limits in
an attempt to get you to spend. Limit the number of credit
accounts you have.
Make sure that you are aware of the interest rates and fees
associated with each of your credit cards. Some cards charge
annual fees and membership fees. Avoid using these kinds of
cards. You should never have to pay a fee to have a credit
card. Try to negotiate for a lower interest rate or shop around
for a new credit card that does have a low interest rate.
Credit is extremely important. All it takes is one bad mistake
and your credit can be ruined for years. Knowing the most common
mistakes that people make will help to make sure that you handle
your credit responsibly. Use your credit wisely to avoid having
to do major credit repair.
