Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Goal
Realization and Encountering Roadblocks
If you have already set a goal and worked
out a plan for working toward it, congratulations! You have
taken the first important steps toward realizing your dreams
and leading a very happy and satisfying life. Unfortunately,
many people find themselves giving up part way through the
road of life because of roadblocks standing in their way. The
trick is to never let roadblocks stop you from achieving your
dreams – there is always an alternate path. And, if one doesn’t
already exist, there is nothing wrong with creating a new one!
Encountering Roadblocks
When you set a goal, you need to create a plan to work toward
this goal. This plan is like your own personal roadmap to success.
Every now and again along your path, you need to consult your
map to make sure you are still on the right path. But, what
happens if you accidentally take a wrong turn or if you encounter
a roadblock? When this happens, you might begin to feel panicky
and feel tempted to just turn around and go back.
Think about it, when you are on a road trip, you probably
get a little nervous when something goes wrong with the route
you had planned for the trip. If you don’t have a road map,
you likely get even more upset because you don’t know what
other routes are available. The same is true with the road
map of life. You have your goal and you have your plan, but
if something unexpected occurs, you get upset and you might
even think about giving up. Don’t. If something goes wrong,
it is up to you to find another route toward your goal.
Finding a New Route
When you are on a road trip, it is always best to bring a
map with you so you can find a new route. You may not have
thoroughly thought out other possible routes, but with your
map in hand, you can determine a new one. The same is true
with your plans for reaching a goal. When you create your plan,
you should think of things that can go wrong along the way.
Then, determine what you can do about these roadblocks if they
do occur. This way, you have your back up plans already set
in place. You might not enjoy working around these roadblocks.
After all, just like with a road trip, roadblocks can make
the trip take longer and cost more money. But, try to look
on the bright side. Maybe this way is more scenic, or maybe
you will learn more on your alternate route.
Of course, no one can see the future and, as such, you probably
won’t be able to determine every possible roadblock or missed
turn you might encounter. These alternative routes are the
ones that aren’t on your map. No map has every single road
on it, there are simply too many to include on one map. On
any given map, there are hundreds of back roads and side roads
that are not shown – but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
The same holds true with you plan toward your goal. Just because
your map may not have alternate routes for when you hit those
roadblocks, it doesn’t mean they routes aren’t there. Sometimes,
it might take a little exploration down a few different roads
until you find the one that gets you back on track, but with
enough tenacity and creative thinking, you will be able to
get there.
Keeping Your Tank Full
If you do find yourself becoming overwhelmed by the roadblocks
life throws your way, there is nothing wrong with pulling of
the road and taking a break. Just like with a road trip, you
can’t drive all day and night without ever stopping. Sooner
or later, you are going to need to take a break to refuel your
car and to refuel your body. The same is true when working
toward your goals. Now and again, you might need to take a
break and reassess your situation. If you aren’t sure of the
right route to take when you encounter a roadblock, it is okay
to stop and think for a while about which route you should
take. If you just start driving down every road you see, you
will run out of gas and find yourself stranded and tired in
the middle of nowhere. Instead, pull over, take a look at your
map, and carefully plan out your potential alternate routes.
Then, make sure you and your car are fully reloaded before
embarking once more on the road of life.
