Habits Lead To Goal Achievement
Habits
can make you or break you. Most of
the time, it is the bad habits that get all the publicity.
Smoking is detrimental to your health. Procrastination can
cause you to lose a better job opportunity. But good habits
play a strong role as well. Walking daily can have wonderful
health benefits. Writing everything down in your calendar can
ensure that you do not miss an appointment. Creating good habits
can lead to goal achievement and success.
The
first good habit to get into is to get organized. Find
the things that seem to always pop up and ruining things for
you. Maybe you can never seem to find your car keys. One thing
you could do is to install a key rack next to the door and
learn to always hand your keys there. Maybe you have a hard
time finding your bills when you need to pay them. Learning
to drop them in a labeled file folder will make things all
the easier for you. A clean work, organized workspace is easier
to work in. A calendar makes it easier to remember appointments.
Another
good habit is to develop a system. What daily things
are you doing that are hurting you? Now is the time to change
them. Spending ten minutes a day to clean your house will prevent
a three-hour cleaning job on your day off. Getting up fifteen
minutes earlier will help insure that you are ready to go to
work and maybe even have time to stop for a cup of coffee.
Learn to be consistent with it as well. A simple, every day
routine will be much more effective than doing something just
whenever you remember it. Knowing what you are doing and why
you are doing it will help you to focus on the goals that you
want to achieve.
Learn
to be in control of yourself. No one knows you better
than you do. Sometimes you just have to learn to listen to
yourself. Maybe you do not want to go to that keg party the
night before the big exam? Learn how to tell your friends no,
not tonight. Too used to slumping in front of the TV instead
of doing things around the house? Learn to tell yourself no,
no rewards until you are done with your chores. Being a pushover
is not going to make you happier; chances are you will just
be more tired and angry and frustrated. Learn to say no to
the things that you do not want, and yes to the things that
you do.
Remember
that being perfect is not the answer. It takes anywhere
from three to six weeks for a new habit to stick, so do not
beat yourself up if you miss a day. Instead just strive harder
to meet that goal the next day. Do not set up your routines
in the picture perfect style either. Find a system that works
for you and you alone. Trying to fit yourself into other people’s
reality is only going to make it that much more difficult.
Tweak your routines periodically so that everything continues
to run smoothly. As life changes and your goals changes your
habits will change with them.
Another
habit is to learn to break down your goals. Setting
your sights on one huge, impossible task is going to be very
discouraging. Breaking your goals down into small, manageable
steps that you can do makes them easier to accomplish and stick
with. Small steps add up quickly, and you might be surprised
at how soon you have reached your larger goal.
How
are good habits going to help you reach your goals? Consider
this: good habits create good time management. Good time management
means that you get more things done. Good time management saves
you time. How much time is saved looking for your car keys
if you always hang them in the same spot? How much time is
saved doing your monthly bills if you know where all your receipts
are? Having good habits will help you to identify those things
that are important to you and the things that are just wasting
your time. Good habits define your goals. Good habits make
you feel better about yourself. Good habits focus on results.
