Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Achieve
Your Goals and Be Happy
Everyone wants to be happy. Unfortunately,
many people do not feel truly happy in their lives. Instead,
they look around at all of the people around them that appear
to be happy and, often times, retreat into a shell and fall
into depression. If you are one these people, you should know
that happiness is achievable. It isn’t necessarily easy to
get there, but you can do it if you are willing to work for
it.
Happiness Through Goal Setting
The first step toward happiness is to set goals. Without goals
in life, you have nothing to work toward. As a result, you
will find yourself walking aimlessly through life, encountering
one disappointment after another. Take the time to sit down
and really think through your life. Consider your likes, your
dislikes, and your interests. Think about where you would like
yourself to be 10 years from now in order to be happy. Don’t
dismiss any ideas as being unrealistic because you have convinced
yourself you could never reach that dream. At this stage, the
sky is the limit. What will make you happy? A family? A satisfying
career? A beautiful home? A fancy car? Be honest with yourself
and think this through carefully.
No one is going to hand you happiness. If you sit around waiting
for happiness to find you, happiness will never be achieved.
You need to actively seek happiness and work toward achieving
it, always making an effort to work toward your dreams and
honestly assessing your personal, unique situation.
Be Your Own Best Friend
Often the obstacle standing between you and happiness is you.
Many people tend to be their own worst enemies; convincing
themselves they can never achieve a dream before they even
start working toward it. If you don’t believe in yourself,
who will? The power of positive thinking is a strong power,
indeed. Don’t allow yourself to dismiss a dream because it
“isn’t possible.” Instead, be your own cheering section, encouraging
yourself every step of the way toward achieving you goal, and
happiness.
Furthermore, don’t allow your life to become overwhelmed or
to talk yourself out of working toward a goal. If it will make
your happy, it is worth your time and effort. Too many people
give up because they don’t have the patience to wait for the
goal to be achieved. It is common to say, “I would really like
to have XYZ career, but then I have to go to college. I don’t
want to wait four years to get started.” Or, “I really would
like to lose weight, but it takes so long to take the pounds
off.” Look at it this way – if you don’t work toward your goal
that time will still pass. Four years from now, you can either
still be in your dead end job, or you can be starting a career
that you love. Two years from now, you can still be upset with
the size of your body, or you can finally be the size you want
to be. The choice is yours to make.
Creating a Plan
After you have set a goal, it is time to create a plan for
attaining it. If, for example, you want to own your own business
in 10 years, start deciding what you need to do now to reach
that dream. Then, make mini-goals to meet along the way. Decide
where you need to be one year, two years, and three years,
and so on from now. You might even need to break down your
mini-goals into monthly steps. Then, consult your plan regularly
to make sure you are on track and achieving your mini-goals.
If you are unable to meet one of your mini-goals within the
timeframe you have established, don’t look at it as a failure.
Instead, it is a minor setback. Simply go back to your plan
and make adjustments as necessary. You might find that you
can still make your long-term goal on time by tweaking other
parts of your plan. Or, your long-term plan may be set back
a few months or a couple years. Don’t be discouraged. What
matters are that you are working toward that goal and, every
day, you are one step closer.
