Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Achieve
Your Dreams Without Many Sacrifices
Everyone has dreams and ambitions. It is a
normal part of life to want to achieve more and to willing
to work toward it. The important part to remember is to keep
the rest of your life in balance, as well. It is far too easy
to focus entirely on your dream while the rest of your world
crumbles around you. When this happens, the dream is meaningless
once it is reached because there is no one around to share
in your joy.
Being Realistic
The first step in maintaining a balance while working toward
your dream is to remain realistic. You know what your dream
is; now you need to determine the steps necessary to achieve
it. This means breaking the steps down into their smaller parts
and deciding which parts you truly attain in your current situation.
For example, you may have a dream of owning a large, beautiful
home. If you don’t have the money right now, it means you will
need to save up to reach this dream. Now, you need to decide
how to do this in a manner that will not force you to ignore
other parts of your life, such as your family, friends, and
own well being. You could decide to pick up a part time job
and work another 20 hours per week on top of the job you already
have. But, this means sacrificing time with your family and
it will add extra stress to your life. Is this worth obtaining
your dream? Perhaps there are other steps you can take to get
there, such as cutting back on shopping trips or other expenses.
In this way, you are only sacrificing the “extras” in life
instead of the things that are truly important.
Never plan steps toward your dream that involve sacrificing
other things that are important to you. Remain realistic regarding
what you can expect of yourself and of those around you. Be
sure to never place too much stress on the ones around you
in order to reach your dream, or you might find they won’t
be there when your dream is attained.
Checking In
Now and again while working toward your dream, you need to
take a moment to honestly assess your situation. Are you progressing
toward your dream? If so, great! But, ask yourself, at what
cost? If you find that you are achieving your dream, but it
is costing you relationships or too much money, you might need
to reassess your situation and determine a different path.
For example, if your dream is to become a music star, you may
invest a great deal of time and money in the dream. You need
to tour as often as possible and purchase equipment that can
be quite costly. It is important, however, that you do not
overspend on your dream and put yourself into a debt that you
cannot overcome. At the same time, you need to make sure that
you are not touring so often that your friends and loved ones
feel alienated.
It is possible to have developed what you thought was a great
plan, only to discover later that it is too strenuous on yourself
or those your love. It is okay to change your plan and create
a new one that will help you to better maintain balance in
your life. At the same time, it is okay to work a little harder
toward your dream if you discover there is still room for improvement
that can be reached without giving up other parts of your life.
Remember the “Little People”
Okay, maybe your dream isn’t to become a big star, but no
matter what your dream is, you need to make sure to remember
those that helped you achieve it. Reaching your dream only
to forget your roots is a dire mistake. Life has a funny way
of taking unexpected twists and turns. So, if your dream is
to make it far in your career, for example, never look down
your nose toward those people who were once in your place.
Before you know it, they may be the ones on top looking down
at you. Part of balancing your life is remaining humble and
never taking anything, or anyone, for granted.
