Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Goal
Realization:
Never Give Up and Think Positive
Realizing your goals is really quite simple
if you put a few proven strategies to use.
#1 Never Give Up
This strategy seems so simple, yet many people fail to live
by it. Too often, people give up when they encounter an obstacle
in their life. Ironically, most of these obstacles could be
easily overcome if a person refuses to allow the obstacle to
stand in the way. If you run into an obstacle, look for another
route toward achieving your goal. Or, better yet, find a way
to use the obstacle to your advantage. Look at Stevie Wonder.
He didn’t let his blindness stand in his way. Instead, he achieved
his dreams and earned additional recognition and respect in
the music industry because of his disability. Bruce Willis
did the same thing. As a youngster, he had a stuttering problem.
He realized that when he acted on stage, however, he didn’t
have the problem. So, he spent a great deal of time on stage
and today, he is a multi-million dollar award winning actor.
#2 Think Positive
Your mindset can truly make or break whether or not you achieve
your goals. If you believe in yourself, you are more likely
to put forth the effort required to achieve your goals. If
you don’t believe in yourself, however, you are more likely
to give up after encountering your first problem.
Negative thinkers also have the tendency to destroy their
chances for success before they even begin working toward a
goal. They convince themselves that they can reach the goal
and that there is no use trying. Positive thinkers, on the
other hand, realize that there may be obstacles along the way,
but believe in their ability to overcome those obstacles and
reach their goals.
Furthermore, your attitude is contagious. If other people
sense your ambition, your desire, and your positive thinking,
they are more likely to jump on your bandwagon and help you
achieve your goals. The more people you have working with you
toward achieving your goal, the greater your chances of success.
#3 Keep Your Eye on the Goal
In sports, the best athletes are always aware of where they
are in respect to the goal. A basketball player knows which
end of the court the basket is on, a soccer player knows where
the goal is at, even a track star knows the location of the
finish line. Those athletes at the top of their game continually
keep an eye on the goal, while simultaneously determining the
best path for getting there. You should use this same philosophy
when working toward your own life goals.
It is too easy to become distracted by the obstacles along
the way when working toward your goal. Do you think Brett Favre,
one of the best quarterbacks to have ever played the game,
would have ever reached this status if he allowed himself to
spend all of his time worrying about the guy trying to sack
him? Brett Favre gives that guy very little thought. He does
his best to avoid the obstacle while keeping his eye on the
receiver. If he looks away for even a second, he might lose
him and the play will not be completed. At the same time, Favre
keeps his options open. If the opposing team runs a good play
against him, he might need to change his plans at the last
minute and throw the ball to a different receiver. This play
might not gain as many yards as the one that was planned, but
it still helps get Favre, and his team, one step closer to
the goal.
#4 Remember Those Around You
One problem many people forget when working toward their goal
is to still take care of those around them. It is important
to maintain your relationships and to not let the rest of your
life fall apart around you while working toward your goal.
This may seem contradictory to “Keep your eye on the goal.”
In reality, the two go hand and hand.
Consider Favre again. Would he be able to win the game without
the rest of his team? Of course not! At the same time, the
guys on his team won’t play nearly as hard or as well with
him if he is not a good leader on the field. Many teams throughout
football history have failed largely because the quarterback
failed to connect with the rest of the team. Therefore, it
is important to keep your eye on the goal while still juggling
the other areas of your life, including your relationships.
This is why planning steps toward achieving your goal is so
important, because you can plan steps that will allow you to
work toward your goal without giving up other things in your
life that are important to you.
