Goal Realization For Teenagers

Goal realization among teenagers is a subject that continually remains overlooked. But why has this subject remained unexplored? Teenagers have a fresh perspective on things. They have the youth, energy, and time to set and achieve even the loftiest of goals. Many times, teenagers lack the experience and guidance to set and realize goals. In some cases, teenagers may lack the interest or desire to discuss goal realization. But goal realization is something that everyone can work on, no matter how small or big the goal may seem. Here are a few guidelines for getting teenagers involved in the life long process of goal realization.

Modern Teenagers and the Challenges they Face

Today's teenagers face a specific set of challenges that are perhaps more complicated than those faced by previous generations. More than ever before, teenagers today have an almost overwhelming amount of choices to make. They face pressures from school, home, and their peers. They are also faced by a seemingly endless parade of possibilities. Their future is wide open, rife with possibility. This is where the process of goal realization comes into play. By determining where their talents, abilities, interests, and resources lie, teenagers will be able to set realistic goals for themselves. They can whittle down the possibilities to something slight more manageable and accessible.

To the Heart of It: How to Set a Person Goal

Many teenagers will find themselves overwhelmed by the choices and decisions they face. Try this easy exercise. Take out a piece of paper and pen and write down this phrase: "If I could accomplish any goal I wanted, I would…" Have them finish the sentence. If the teenager you are working with gets discouraged, have them try out several scenarios. Eventually, they will come upon an idea that sticks with them.

Getting Teenagers to Set and Achieve Their Own Goals

Teenagers are at an interesting phase in their lives because they have reached a stage of burgeoning autonomy. When you are a teenager, you are beginning to exercise your sense of autonomy and self-choice. Even the most apathetic teenager can be guided toward the process of goal realization. To help a teenager set his or her own goals, begin by allowing them to articulate their talents and desires. What is it that they really want at this point in their life? Are they interested in getting a part-time job, saving money for college, improving their grade point average, making new friends, learning how to play the guitar? Whatever their goal, it is paramount that it stems from their own personal desire.

Making Steady Progress Towards A Goal

If you are working with a teenager to help him or her achieve their goal, it is important that they are able to articulate their own goals. Once they have articulated a specific goal, there are many ways that you can help them make steady progress in the direction of their goal. Many counselors suggest creating a progress chart. Teenagers will find themselves more motivated and open to the goal realization process if they can break it up into several small parts.

Break up the larger goal into several smaller tasks. The easier the tasks, the smoother the road to success will seem. Making the goal realization as accessible as possible is particularly important when working with teenagers. More than others, teenagers are more apt to becoming discouraged by perceived moments of failure. Emphasize the importance of coming across stumbling blocks. These setbacks are usually good opportunities to learn, gain valuable knowledge, and experience personal growth.

Present Worthy Examples to Hesitant Teens

If you are working with a teenager who seems especially hesitant or who doubts his or her own talents and ideas, use the example of other teens to get them motivated. Although we may not always hear about it, there are countless teens out there that are accomplishing extraordinary things each day. Present such figures to teenagers to get them motivated. Show them what young adults their age are getting done. Even the most hesitant or apathetic teenager is bound to demonstrate interest when you show them what kids their age are doing. Be honest about the focus and hard work that goes along with goal realization, but emphasize the seemingly endless possibilities that lay ahead.
