Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Goal
Realization and Your State of Mind
As you prepare your goals, you want to remember
to have a specific goal and always be aware of the reasons
you want this goal. When you do this, you will be motivated
to accomplish it. You have your goal and you understand completely
the reason you are setting the goal now how do you make it
a reality? You do this with a plan.
Many
people enjoy planning things and it comes very natural
to them. They are good at looking forward and seeing each step
that needs to be taken to accomplish a particular task. Then
there are the rest of us who can barely look to the end of
the day and plan the steps that need to be taken. Those of
us who prefer spontaneity do not enjoy being “pulled down”
to reality through the aspect of setting goals. We prefer looking
at the overall scheme of things. We are good at ideas and concepts
and are great motivators to getting the goals accomplished.
We are great leaders. Simply motivating and talking about the
“big picture” or “dreams” will not bring them to fruition.
You need details. Details are the driving force behind the
realization of the goal.
What are some reasons that goals fail to reach realization?
Long-term
motivation is hard to keep up with - this is evident
when the first of the year rolls around, we all make “New Year’s
Resolutions”, and the majority of those goals are lost before
the first month is over.
The
goals lack definition – especially if you made goals at
the first of the year. Goals that are not thought out and detailed
will not be realized.
Trying to accomplish several
goals at one time – will quickly
become overwhelming and end up in the wastebasket. It is realistic
to accomplish between three to six goals per year and that
is dependent upon what type of goals they are.
The goals are unrealistic – we all have great drive and desires
yet this does not always translate into appropriate goal setting.
When you set, your goals remember your abilities and do not
set them so that after a week your energy is depleted because
they are not attainable. A goal should be set according to
your knowledge and range of abilities. If you set them beyond
what you can realistically do, they will sit there collecting
dust.
Goals need to be specific – when you are preparing your goals
think about the result you are looking for. What do you hope
to learn or gain from accomplishing this goal? Are there any
obstacles that could cause you not to reach your goal? What
steps are you going to take to reach your goal? Be specific,
and how are you going to measure your success once you have
reached your goal.
Goals need to be measured – many people forget this component
when they are setting their goals. If you have no way to measure
how you are doing you will not know whether or not the goal
has been met or if there are changes that need to be made in
order to realize your goal.
Goals have not
been written down – it is not enough to think
about the goal or even talk about it to others. That is a great
start but if you do not put your goals down on paper then you
have little chance of seeing them through to the end. It is
not enough to put down on paper that you want to accomplish
a certain thing. You need to be specific write down the steps
you are going to take to get there. Write down the milestones
along the way. Write down the dates and times you plan to review
your goals to see if you are on track. Writing your goals and
the details is very important in seeing your goal through to
completion.
Consider the Wright Brothers – they had a goal to fly, but
that was not enough. They knew they would need to get in the
air, yet that still was not enough. They have the goal to fly,
great how do you do it. Their goal came to realization in the
details, the plans, the attempts, and many times the failures.
They modified tried until they saw their goal come to realization
and we are quite happy they did! For your goal to succeed you
have take the big picture in your mind and incorporate the
details that will bring you to your end. You need to create
the road that you will travel to see the results in the end.
