Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Achieve
a Goal: Schedule Daily Activities
We plan everything. We plan for trips to the
doctor. We plan on what schools our kids will go to. We plan
the next PTA meeting. We plan church functions. We plan business
trips. We might even plan to plan something. In this sea of
too much to do it is easy to get lost and forget to plan about
the most important person – yourself. Realize your goal of
keeping in touch – schedule yourself into your daily activities.
The
most important step to start with is to identify what is
important to you. Make a list. How is your job? Are you
happy? Are you where you want to be? Do you want to be more
involved in your community? Does that mean joining a church,
a social group, or volunteering somewhere? Do you want to take
up any new hobbies or start a craft? Do you want to go back
to school? What do you want to study? Do you want to improve
in your relationships? Does that mean game night with the kids,
date night with your spouse, or girl’s night out with friends?
Have you wanted to start working out? Does that mean joining
a gym or a weight-loss program? Like any other goals, rank
items by what is the most important to you.
Next, start planning for these goals like you would any other.
What do you need to do in order to achieve these
goals? How
much time do you need? What equipment do you need? Why have
you not achieved these goals in the past? Write all of it down.
If you do not like your current job, what steps do you need
to get a new one? How is your resume? If you want to volunteer,
where will you go? What hours are they open? Do need to take
classes for a new hobby or for a better education? If you want
to improve your relationship with your family, how do you plan
on doing it? Do you need more time together? Do you need a
vacation? How much do the plane tickets cost and how do you
arrange for time off of work? Once you can identify what it
is you need to achieve your goals you have a list of what to
do to get started.
Now, take a good, realistic
look at your calendar. Are you
doing anything now that you really should not or do not want
to be doing? Have you spread yourself too thin? Are you using
your time most effectively? Are you still involved in activities
that you no longer need to be? You might find some nonessential
things that can be dropped, or items that can be arranged to
give yourself more time elsewhere. Once you have done this,
schedule yourself some personal time. If you have signed up
for a karate class, write it down in your calendar. If you
are going to have a family movie night, schedule it in. You
have to focus on things to change them. If you want to start
getting up a half hour earlier to go for a jog, start setting
your alarm clock.
Lastly, learn
how to safeguard your time. Your personal time
should be just as important as any other item in your schedule.
Learn how to say no to friends and yes to yourself. While once
in a while it might be necessary, you should not be sacrificing
your professional or social life for your personal one. It
is ok to say no. Learn how to segregate your time also. A little
multi-tasking is good, but too much and you will not be helping
anything. If you have scheduled a play date with your kids,
do not spend the whole time thinking about projects at work
or calling to check up on the PTA bake sale. Focus instead
on your kids. Then, when you get back to work you can focus
on that instead of dwelling on your kids. Turn off the computer,
phone, TV or whatever distracts you from yourself – or turn
them back on if that is one of your goals.
Finding time to take care of yourself will ultimately lead
you to feel happier and more refreshed. It will improve your
attitude and self esteem. With all of this, you will be able
to go out and conquer the other goals that you have in life.
