Setting Goals & Goal Realization
Achieve
Your Goals: Analyze Situation & Make Realistic Changes
Everyone who has ever set goals for him or
herself eventually must come upon an obstacle. Coming
upon obstacles is part of the process of achieving any goal. For
the most part, running into obstacles can be a learning experience
and help foster personal growth. But how do you know when the
obstacles are too great to overcome? How do you know when a
goal is too difficult to achieve? In many cases, in order to
achieve a goal you will have to make realistic changes. Rather
than view this as some kind of compromise, you should approach
the process of achieving your goals with an open mind. Flexibility
and the ability to negotiate obstacles (or in some cases, even
a series of obstacles) is key to achieving your goals. People
who have been successful in articulating and achieving their
personal goals know that it takes a great deal of perseverance
and negotiating to reach the summit of personal achievement.
So
how do you go about making realistic changes in order to
achieve your personal goals? First, you must be specific about
what you are trying to attain or achieve. Often, we get bogged
down in the details. The process of achieving your goals can
often be a long, steady process of trial and error. Many people
fail at achieving their goals because they get caught up in
the process. They make a few mistakes, and quickly judge themselves
as a failure. Be specific about your final destination. Remember
what your goal is. Try to keep the idea of it in the front
of your mind. Remind yourself by placing inspirational notes
around your work area. Never forget what your goal is, and
why you are pursuing it. If you are pursuing a goal for the
right reasons, you will not fail. Failure, indeed, becomes
impossibility. This is because success doesn't really depend
on a specific result. Rather, success is more closely related
to the honest pursuit of a worthy goal. The process, rather
than the result, is what really matters.
If you find that part of the process becomes hampered by something,
it is well worth taking a step and reviewing your steps. What
is it that is keeping you from achieving your goals? Is your
goal to finish your college degree, but you find yourself unable
to make the commitment to going back to school full or part-time?
In this case, you need to make realistic changes in order to
achieve your goals. Be honest with yourself. How serious are
you about really finishing your degree? Are you willing to
make the commitment, and endure the sacrifices, that such a
goal demands? If you find yourself incapable of making these
changes, then perhaps you are not as passionate about your
goal as you previously thought. Individuals who truly want
to realize their goals will fight tooth and nail to accomplish
them. Lack of time, resources, and even emotional support will
not detract the most dedicated goal-seekers. If you are truly
serious about realizing your goals, you will have to at one
point or another make serious, sometimes even life-altering
decisions and changes in order to reach your goals.
What
can you do to make the process as smooth as possible? The best thing you can do in order to realize your goals without
having to make tremendous changes or sacrifices in your life
is to put into place a strategic plan. Planning helps guide
you toward your goal. Without a plan, you can easily lose focus
and find yourself adrift, constantly alternating between working
on your goal, and then putting it on the backburner of your
life. Before setting off in the direction of your goal, take
the time to plan things as much as you can. Of course, many
variables will be out of your hands. But there are many things
you can control. For instance, you can make sure you have a
positive support network in place. A positive support network
should be made up of friends, family members, and colleagues
who are rooting for you, who want to see you succeed and are
willing to help you in times of doubt or trouble. Planning
also means being mentally prepared for those moments when everything
seems to go awry. Plan on the road being a bit bumpy. If you
brace yourself for the challenges to come, you will be better
able to deal with them on the road to achieving your goals.
