   Achieve Your Dreams: Compartmentalization

What is the secret of most people who seem to always successfully achieve their goals? Compartmentalization! When it comes to goal realization, compartmentalization is an important skill to master if you are serious about achieving your goals. Even the loftiest goal can eventually be reached if it is broken up into a series of small workable steps that can be used to attain your greatest dreams.

The easiest way to begin the compartmentalizing process is to take out a pad of paper and pen and start writing. First, be specific about what it is that you would like to achieve. What is your goal? Be as specific as possible. Do you want to write a screenplay? Open a new restaurant? Lose 50 pounds? Get yourself out of high amounts of debt? These goals can appear insurmountable at first, especially if you are starting from scratch. But take heart. Remember that many successful individuals probably started with even less resources than you.

Write down your goal. Once you have articulated the specifics of your goal, start drawing up a step-by-step plan that you think will help you achieve your goal. Write down even the most obvious steps. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds, start by writing down your current weight. Next, figure out how many calories you consume on a regular day. Write that down too. Figure out how many calories you have to cut each day in order to experience weight loss. This all seems very elementary, but it's important to break up the goal into small manageable steps in order to achieve success. Be very matter of fact about the whole process. Don't fret about the future, or the challenges you may face. Simply work in small spurts of activity.

In order to keep you motivated, use a chart to help track your progress. Goal realization has a lot to do with making lots of small changes. A chart will help you see the process of change in your life. Sometimes, it's far too easy to get caught up in the number of decisions, pressures, and choices you will be faced with. Using a chart can help keep you grounded. Put this chart in a place where you can see it every day. Be certain to frequently update your chart. Check off each step as you go along, no matter how small or insignificant or obvious it may seem. You'll be glad you did later on, especially in moments of frustration and discouragement. In these moments, refer to your chart to see the progress you have made.

Another aspect of successful compartmentalization is the celebration of milestones. Every time you accomplish one of the small steps of your goal, take the time to acknowledge it. You should celebrate even the smallest steps. Consider these milestones on your journey to achieving your goal. Take note of these small successes on your progress chart. By taking the time to celebrate each small step, you will find your energy replenished, your motivation renewed, and one step closer to living your dream.

What things should you avoid during the goal realization process? Many people find themselves getting overly involved in some parts of the compartmentalization process. If you find yourself getting very stressed out over some part of the process, let it go. You may find that your circumstances change, and you may experience more than your share of setbacks. You may even have to redefine your goals. The important thing is to keep going. Take the time to acknowledge your setbacks. Don't use these setbacks as evidence that your goal is unworthy or unattainable. Don't play the blame game, using your perceived failure as evidence that you lack the resources and support network to succeed. Instead, try to categorize these setbacks as part of your process. The truth is that all the stumbling blocks you encounter can provide you with valuable information if you are willing to look for it. Be honest with yourself. Are you taking too much on at once? Do you currently lack the skills or knowledge to get through that part of the process? Whatever you do, don't let these setbacks allow you to abandon your project completely.
