Setting Goals & Goal Realization
How
To Realize and Achieve Your Goals
While your goal may seem daunting, realizing
and achieving it is not. It is easier than you think. Follow
these simple steps and your goal will be achieved before you
know it.
Step
one is to define your goals. Consider everything, even
if it seems totally out of reach at this time. Let your imagination
be the limit. What would you do if you had more time? What
do you want to accomplish in the next five, or ten, or twenty
years of life? What do you regret about the last five, or ten,
or twenty years? Make your goals concrete, and with set time
limits. It is much easier to accomplish something if you know
exactly what it is and when you want to do it. For example,
instead of saying lose weight, say lose ten pounds by June
1st.
Step
two is to identify the importance of your goals. What
are your personal values? Which goals are therefore the most
important to you? Why are they important? What are the obstacles
to achieving them? Then rank them from most important to the
least important. While you might not be able to rank your goals
one through ten, you can assign them a position – number one
goals are very important, number two goals are only moderately
important, and number three goals are not very important to
you. After each goal write the obstacles. What is stopping
you? Do you need something that you do not already have? Why
have you not reached this goal already? Be perfectly honest
with yourself – this is how you can identify your problem areas
and overcome them.
Step
three is to write out your plans on how to overcome your
problems. What do you need to do to move on past the obstacle?
What in our life needs changing? Maybe in identifying your
weight loss goal you realized that you did not have shoes or
the time to take up jogging. A plan could look like this: 1.
Rent videos this month instead of going to the theater. 2.
Use money saved to buy a new pair of running shoes. 3. Set
alarm for 30 minutes earlier and go for a jog. Now you have
a concrete plan that you can mark the items off of as the objectives
are completed. Make a plan for each of your goals. Depending
on the difficulty of the goal, there might be two or three
steps or there might be twenty. Either way is fine as long
as you can come up with a solution to your personal obstacles.
Step
four is to break your goals down into manageable steps
with time limits. One huge goal will seem daunting and prevent
you from ever getting started. The new pieces should be smaller
accomplishments that will help you achieve your main goal and
have set timelines. In our weight loss instance, if you say
you have five weeks to lose the ten pounds, your new goals
will be to lose two pounds by May 4th, May 11th, May 18th,
May 25th, and June 1st. Two pounds a week is a smaller goal,
and may seem more manageable, but it still helps you achieve
your larger goal of losing ten pounds by June 1st. Stick to
the timeline. If you can, find someone else who can help keep
you accountable. Some goals, like losing weight or stopping
smoking, are actually easier to achieve when you use a buddy
system. For items that you are working alone on, it may be
easier to find a way to highlight them in your calendar, such
as circling them with red marker or using a bright-colored
ink to write them out.
Step
five is to celebrate your successes and continuing planning
ahead. Take time out to celebrate when you meet your smaller
goals as well as when you make your overall one. It does not
have to be anything in particular as a reward, as long as it
is something you enjoy. It can be as simple as taking a couple
hours out of your day, or if you have reached a big goal, taking
a small vacation. Do not forget to go back and check on your
larger goal often. How are you doing overall? Do you need to
make some adjustments in your process? Maybe you have achieved
your goal – is that it? Or now that you have lost those 10
pounds is your goal to keep it off and start a long-term exercise
program? By now you should be well on your road to success.
