I Desperately Want To Feel Better About Myself
What
Are The Signs Of Low Self Esteem?
So what are the signs of low self esteem?
This can be useful to know if you are concerned about a friend
or family member that you think may be suffering from low self
esteem, and also if you think you may have this problem yourself.
First it is important to understand that we all have doubts
about our abilities or capabilities at times. For example a
person who is under a lot of stress may feel that they cannot
cope with the situation that they are in. But a person with
high self esteem in that position will look at the situation
and consider how it can be changed so that it is more manageable.
A person with low self esteem, on the other hand,
will blame themselves and see the problem as their own failure. Or sometimes,
they will blame other people.
A person who has a very low value of themselves is naturally
going to present themselves to the world in a very
negative way. Often, this means presenting themselves as a victim. They
may spend a lot of time complaining, blaming others for situations
that they find themselves in. It's as if they have to find
somebody to blame for everything that goes wrong. It has to
be somebody's fault.
This is a way of avoiding taking responsibility for their
own lives. It comes out of the belief that they do not have
the ability or right to make themselves happy. Looking for
a solution would, they think, end in failure. They want to
feel better about themselves and blaming other people is the
only way they know.
If you know somebody who acts this way, it is sometimes possible
to help them by pointing out things that they could do to improve
whatever it is that they are complaining about. However, often
they will reject this type of help. They will keep thinking
of reasons why your suggestions will not work. It is often
better just to tell them what you like about them. If they
can actually believe you, they may start to feel good enough
about themselves to stop complaining once in a while.
Another one of the signs of low self esteem is a person who
allows themselves to be used by others. They often try very
hard to please other people and will do almost anything that
is asked of them. Unfortunately, people do not usually value
those who are so eager to please. It's like the kid who tries
to buy friendship by giving away all his candy and toys at
school. It doesn't work: the other kids take the candy and
toys, but they know that it was weakness, not generosity, that
made him give them away.
Other signs of low self esteem include addictions,
dissatisfaction with life, and constant changing of jobs
or partners. People
with low self esteem are very likely to take the easy way out
of a challenging situation. They do not believe that they have
the power to improve their lives, so rather than facing up
to a challenge in a job, for example, they will look for another
job. Rather than working on a relationship they will keep looking
for the perfect partner with whom, they think, no effort will
be required.
The good news is that low
self esteem can be turned around.
We can change if we want to. It is often just a matter of acknowledging
that there is a problem and that we do have the power to change
how we think. So if you have any of these signs of low self
esteem yourself, now is the time to take action.
