I Desperately Want To Feel Better About Myself
Is
There A Link Between Depression and Low Self Esteem?
For many people with depression, low self
esteem is also an issue too. But is this just coincidence or
is there an actual link? Does low self esteem cause depression
or is it the other way around? Or is there no causal relationship
at all?
Depression
and low self esteem do not always go together. Some cases of depression have a specific cause, for example
the hormonal fluctuations that cause post natal depression,
grief after the loss of a loved one, or post traumatic stress
disorder.
In these and other cases, depression can affect somebody who
normally has a high or normal level of self esteem. Even though
their view of themselves is likely to become more negative
while they are suffering from depression low self esteem will
almost certainly improve as they recover from the depression.
In other situations, a feeling of low self worth is a much
longer lasting problem. It may affect somebody's whole life
from childhood onward. Somebody like that may suffer from low
grade depression most of the time. They may not be aware of
it, because it is their normal state. But their low self esteem
is actually causing them to be depressed.
In many cases a vicious cycle can form with the relationship
of depression low self esteem and other negative emotions such
as anxiety. Anxious people are often expecting bad things to
happen, more than the average person does. People with low
self esteem tend to think that bad things will happen to them
in particular.
In many areas of life, we get what we expect. If we expect
people to behave badly toward us, they often will. If we expect
to lose out on a promotion, we probably will not get it. Having
these bad things happen gives an anxious person more reason
for anxiety, and seems to justify a person with low self esteem
in thinking that they are worse than other people.
Not surprisingly, these attitudes and beliefs can also lead
to depression. People who place a low value on themselves are
not likely to be happy and outgoing. They assume that other
people will not like them, since they do not like themselves.
Sadly, this is often true. A person who is very negative about
themselves and the world can be difficult to like.
Most
people do not like being around somebody who is very depressed.
So again, this intensifies the negative emotions
and the belief that we are worth less than other people.
End
the cycle.
Do
something about it.
