Save Money On Gas

Best Ideas To Save On Gasoline

With gas prices so high, everyone is looking for ways to save more money on gas. There are those who cut out much of their extracurricular activities in an attempt to save gas. Others look to carpooling as a way to save money with soaring gas prices. While these actions certainly are helpful during these times when gas prices shoot up twenty cents or more overnight, there are some ways that you can save on gas without cutting back on the amount that you drive. Some general maintenance guidelines can be employed to help you save at the pump and on the road.

One of the biggest factors in the amount of gas you spend is the type of gas you are putting in your car. Generally gas comes in three different octane levels of gas. These are regular, mid-grade, and premium. Most cars can operate just fine with regular octane gas. Regular is the least expensive of the three different kinds of gas. In most cases, you don’t need to upgrade the gas you use in your vehicle unless you hear a “knocking” in your engine. You can refer to your operator’s manual for guidelines in the level of gas you should use in your vehicle. The difference between regular and premium gas might be a measly few cents but when your car hold several gallons of gas the difference amounts to a few dollars.

What’s going on under your hood also has an impact on the amount you spend on gas. Certain elements of your vehicle can increase or decrease your gas mileage. You should make sure to keep you engine tuned according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This includes adding the necessary fluids and changing the spark plugs when necessary. It has been proven that a tuned engine gets an average of 4% more gas mileage than an engine that has not been properly tuned.

Getting your oil checked every 3,000 miles or 3 months isn’t just a rule of thumb that someone made up. It’s a fact that could help you save money on gas. The purpose of oil is to prevent wear and tear on your engine. It also keeps harmful substances from getting trapped up in your engine. Changing your oil periodically ensures your vehicle is getting the maximum gas mileage performance. There are certain kinds of motor oil that can be added to your vehicle to better conserve energy. Before using this kind of motor oil you should consult a professional to make sure the oil can be safely used in your vehicle.

Chances are you haven’t realized it, but the way you drive has an effect on the way your car uses gas. Your car will use more or less gas depending on your driving habits. Certain habits decrease the efficiency at which your car uses fuel. When you drive at speed over 60 miles per hour, your car’s gas mileage decreases. Keeping your speed at a level that is 60 or below will help your car achieve the most efficient gas mileage.

When your car is idling it is using fuel unnecessarily. Not only does it pollute the air and waste fuel, it costs you money. In times when gas prices are so high, the last thing you want to do is waste more money on gas. If you know you are going to be waiting for an extended period of time turn your car off rather than allowing it to idle. One time might not hurt much, but several times on the same tank of gas will cause a noticeable difference.

Overdrive and cruise control mechanisms were included on your vehicle for more than simple aesthetic enhancements. These features can be used to improve fuel economy in certain road conditions. Going on a long trip? Use the cruise control feature to maintain your car’s speed at level that achieves the best gas mileage. The overdrive feature can be used on the highway when you know your speed will be above 35 miles per hour. Avoid using overdrive within city limits as it can cause damage to your transmission.

As you can see, there are many ways you can save on gas without having to cut back on the trips you take. Use some of these tips to put money back into your pocket instead of spending it at the pump.
