Explain Mental Illnesses To Me
Schizophrenia
Signs to Watch Out For
Schizophrenia is one of the more detrimental
mental illnesses that occur among people. The word
schizophrenia literally means scattered mind. This problem can happen rapidly
or over a longer period of time. If you think that you know
someone who is developing schizophrenia, you can look for certain
signs. By doing this, you can catch the problem in its earlier
stages, allowing the person to be able to move back towards
living a normal life.
The first signs of schizophrenia as a mental illness usually
occur between youth and young adulthood. However, the disease
will not be completely functional until later on in one’s life.
By recognizing schizophrenia when one is a young adult, it
can be easier to treat. However, schizophrenia can take place
in anyone’s life at any given time.
One of the first things that are recognizable in schizophrenia
is disorganized thinking. Usually, one who is developing schizophrenia
will jump from subject to subject. In relation to this, the
topics that they are thinking of will not have much relation
to one another. By not being able to organize their thoughts,
it shows that the person is having a hard time perceiving the
connections that are apparent in relation to reality. In relation
to this, it will seem that what the person is saying is not
coherent to you. The speech is often times so disorganized
that sentences are rearranged or not said completely. Another
part of this is that several will speak in abstract terms instead
of being grounded in their thoughts and what they mean by them.
Another sign that you can notice with those that are developing
schizophrenia is in relation to hallucinations. These may not
be as apparent as other parts of the characteristics, but are
important in defining the problems of schizophrenia. These
hallucinations are usually triggered by the person thinking
that they are a victim of a certain situation. Several will
feel that there are conspiracies moving against them or think
that someone is trying to murder them. They will act on these
hallucinations as though they have already happened.
As a result of these hallucinations, one with this problem
will begin to get paranoid of people and their environment.
They will often withdraw themselves from situations and people
in order to make sure that the threats that they are seeing
do not come into full effect. By seeing someone withdraw from
a situation, and feeling paranoid about people and places,
it is a certain sign that schizophrenic or other paranoid mental
disorders are beginning to become dominant in their life.
Another thing that will become noticeable with the development
of schizophrenia is the change in personality. Often times,
mood swings will occur. Behaviors that is not common for the
person will be another part of this. A person may be in a certain
situation and be happy and content. The next minute, they may
seem sad or angry with the situation. There will be an inconsistency
in these emotions as well as in reactions to them that come
from the person who is suffering from schizophrenia.
Physically, there are also several things to look for. Schizophrenia
means that the person is scattered in their minds way of thinking.
Listening to speech structure is one way of noticing this.
You can also look for the way that one is dressing. If it seems
that they are dressing inappropriately on a consistent basis,
then it is important to look more closely at the other things
they may be saying in relation to this.
On the other side of schizophrenia are the negative responses
that may be apparent with someone with schizophrenia. This
may include a lack of motivation and emotion. It may seem as
though the person experiencing this disorder is absent from
the surroundings or conversations that are occurring. Often,
those with schizophrenia will move between being overly moody
and not expressing moods at all.
Schizophrenia is a recognizable and treatable symptom. The
earlier you can catch the mental illness, the easier it will
be to begin to solve. By looking at physical changes that are
present in one, as well as behaviors that are occurring and
thought processes, you can recognize the problems that one
is having with schizophrenia. # # # # #
