Understanding The Law Of Attraction
Stop
Resisting, Start Relaxing
Life is spiritual resistance training. We
learn and practice every day how to resist things, thoughts,
emotions, situations, and other people. So well do we develop
this ability to resist, in fact, that we not only resist bad
things from happening to us, we resist the good as well. Not
only do we resist the things we don’t want from coming our
way, we resist those things we do want too.
The subject of this article, then, is not how to train oneself
to resist better, but to untrain oneself from all this resisting.
The flip side of spiritual resistance training, the positive
side, is learning how not to resist good things from happening
to us and having what we want. But instead, how to allow it
all in.
The first step to unlearning all our deeply ingrained resistance
tactics is to recognize and acknowledge that they exist. To
do this, let’s examine some of the indications – or symptoms
– of resistance.
Stress
is the ultimate symptom of resistance. If you can recognize
when you are experiencing stress, then you can already tell
when you are resisting. With the stress response comes:
- shallow
breathing
- sweaty
palms
- accelerated
heartbeat
- jittery
stomach
- nervous
shaking and twitching
- cloudy,
impulsive, and irrational thinking
- short
temper
- fear
and other negative emotions
The solution then to training yourself to be free of resistance
is to practice relaxation. In a state of resistance, of stress,
our systems are overstimulated. To relax, then, we must remove
ourselves from all this stimulation for a moment, so that we
can bring ourselves to a state of inward quiet and peace.
One way to do this is to find a dark and quiet room where
you can close the door and arrange to be free of interruptions
for a few moments. Another way is to head to nature, find a
park or a garden or even a tree to sit under. Even city-dwellers
can find a local flower shop or nursery to visit. And if you
simply can't get away from your hectic urban daily grind, bring
a bouquet of flowers or a plant into your environment, put
on your iPod earphones playing some gentle soothing music,
and close your eyes for 5 minutes. Can't do that? Try 30 seconds.
Even just a few minutes (or seconds) of conscious, intentional
relaxation each day can go leaps and bounds towards eliminating
feelings of stress and creating the kind of openness that allows
the beautiful bounty of life to enter.
Resistance
creates a closed-off state with nowhere for anything positive
to enter and no place for anything negative to go. But in a state of allowing, the opposite of resistance, there
is openness, abundant room for positive energy to enter, and
a clear path for all negative energy to be released.
Relaxing involves taking the reins on your breathing, for
one, and transitioning from unconsciously breathing rapidly
and shallowly to consciously breathing slowly and deeply. Relaxing
also involves taking the reins on your thoughts, and allowing
your mind to be free of attachment to any thought circulating
through it. To relax is to still your busy mind and body so
that, for those precious moments, you can simply be. And in
this state, there is no pain, no fear, no struggle, no anger,
no disappointment. No stress. No resistance.
