4 Hemorrhoid Myths - Learn The Truth
There are many different myths circulating
in the general public about hemorrhoids. These myths involve
everything from what causes hemorrhoids to hemorrhoid symptoms
to hemorrhoid natural cures and treatment methods. Let us take
look at the most common myths and then uncover the truths that
lie beneath.
Myth # 1 - Hemorrhoids can lead to cancer
Believing this myth is enough to strike fear in any hemorrhoid
sufferer’s heart! But not to worry because it is just that-
a myth. Let us distinguish between hemorrhoids and cancer.
Hemorrhoids are rectal veins that have become enlarged and
inflamed. On the other hand, cancer is brought on by veins
that have divided and become unruly (in other words, they have
gotten out of control).
Hemorrhoids do not lead to the development of cancer of either
the rectum or the colon (and they will not cause colorectal
cancer). There are rare instances however where individual
with colorectal cancer can be more vulnerable to the formation
of hemorrhoids because of the pressure that the tumor exerts
on the rectal veins.
Myth # 2 - Hemorrhoids are an elderly person’s health issue
This is one of the most common fallacies about hemorrhoids. This
health condition may occur more often in those of an advancing
age but it is not only an older person’s problem. It can be
a problem for anyone at any age.
Hemorrhoids develop when distended and weak veins in the rectum
become bigger and swollen. As a person ages the vein walls
of the rectum have a tendency to weaken and that is what increases
their susceptibility to hemorrhoid formation.
It is important to stop here and mention that lots of things
can lead to hemorrhoid symptoms and therefore necessitate an
appropriate hemorrhoid treatment. For example, not eating enough
fiber can make stools more painful to pass while poor toilet
habits such as straining or reading while seated on the toilet
can put added pressure on the rectal veins that is not good.
A bad diet plays a role as does a lack of physical activity.
In the same way sitting or standing for extended periods of
time can also exert pressure on the veins of the rectum that
is not healthy.
Myth # 3 - Engaging in anal intercourse can cause hemorrhoids
This is another myth that is widely believed by many. The
truth of the matter is that this type of sex will not cause
hemorrhoids to develop. However if you already have hemorrhoids
then this sexual act can serve to irritate the ones you already
have.
Myth # 4 - There is no hemorrhoid treatment that works
You do not have to accept hemorrhoids as your plight in life!
There are many things you can do to heal hemorrhoids and to
treat them. For hemorrhoid relief and to cope with the pain,
itching and burning look to hemorrhoid creams and natural remedies
for hemorrhoids. Sitz baths are beneficial as is changing your
diet to include more fiber. For the most severe cases of hemorrhoids,
surgery is a viable option. # # # # #
