I Want A Healthy Heart!
A
Healthy Heart Needs a Good Night’s Sleep
There are many health habits that can improve
the health of your heart. However, many people often overlook
the power of adequate sleep. Everyone needs to have enough
rest to function. Unfortunately, sleep disturbances can reduce
the amount of sleep you get and seriously affect your health.
One of the most important sleep problems you should know about
is sleep apnea. This sleeping problem is thought to affect
about 10% of the general population. What’s worse is that sleep
apnea is also thought to be a cause of heart disease.
Sleep
apnea is a sleep disorder that actually causes people
to stop breathing while they sleep. They have to actually wake
up in order to begin breathing again. You may think that you’re
sleeping all night, but you’re actually waking up out of deep
sleep over and over again to begin breathing.
People with sleep apnea often develop high
blood pressure.
High blood pressure is a known cause of heart disease and can
lead to heart attacks. Sleep apnea also causes people to have
higher heart rates which, especially combined with high blood
pressure, can lead to heart disease.
It’s also possible for people who suffer from sleep apnea
to have irregular heartbeats because of a surge of adrenaline
during sleep. This irregular heartbeat provides yet another
risk of heart disease.
So how can you know if you need to worry about sleep apnea?
There are several symptoms to watch for. If you snore while
you sleep and feel very sleepy during the day you may be suffering
from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea may also cause you to feel depressed
and agitated.
If you’re concerned about sleep disturbances, you should talk
with your doctor. You can participate in a sleep study in order
to pinpoint exactly what’s happening to you while you sleep.
If you do have sleep apnea, there are many options for treatment.
They include weight loss, a special breathing machine, and
in some cases even surgical intervention. Most people who have
sleep apnea don’t realize how much they suffer from the condition.
Once you begin some form of treatment for sleep apnea, you’ll
begin to feel better almost immediately.
It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep can do! Not only will
you have less fatigue and feel more refreshed – you’ll also
begin to immediately lower your risk of heart disease. If you’re
concerned about your sleep patterns, talk to your doctor immediately
about what you can do.
