Preparing
For a Hurricane
As the wrath of a hurricane approaches, the key is to be
prepared. It is best to be aware of what is happening,
but staying tuned to local weather radio or television
stations regarding storm conditions and instructions.
A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are
possible, but a hurricane warning means that they are
expected, usually within 24 hours. An evacuation plan
should be discussed with all members of the household
long in advance. It is best to determine where
the family will stay if they must leave their home. When packing
up important items for a quick evacuation, it is important
to have vital documents such as house deeds, insurance
policies for auto, homeowner’s and life, wills and trusts,
current driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, birth
and marriage certificates, passports, recent tax records,
and a list of important phone numbers. All of these documents
should be kept in a zip style plastic bag to ensure their
safety.
Important prescription medications and medical supplies along
with any special equipment for children, elderly, or disabled
members of the household also need to be considered. It is
best to pack warm and comfortable clothing, rain gear, and
heavy shoes, plus sleeping bags and pillows. The vehicle which
will be used to transport the family and items should have
a full tank of gas at all times, plus have maps of the area
and any other areas where one is likely to travel to. A flashlight
with extra batteries is vital for each person to have, plus
a first aid kit, and a battery operated AM/FM radio. Bottled
water is also very important to keep everyone hydrated. If
the authorities advise you to evacuate, it is extremely important
to leave immediately.
It is wise to prepare ones home and yard well in advance of
a looming hurricane. It pays to get the required items long
in advance to avoid standing in long lines when the time comes.
Several rolls of plastic sheeting and a staple gun are needed
to protect belongings and to help seal windows and doors. A
good pair of heavy-duty scissors is also important to have.
A shut off wrench to turn the gas and water off to your house
is a good thing to have, but it is vital to know how to do
this in advance. Rope and duct tape are necessary for a variety
of uses. Safety equipment such as heavy leather gloves, disposable
dust masks, and safety glasses should also be added to the
list. Battery operated tools, including a power drill and screwdriver
tips with fully charged batteries, plus a chain saw with extra
fuel can come in handy as well.
The most important step in preparing for a hurricane is to
stay informed. It is best to not be caught by surprise if a
storm path or intensity changes. The storms path and intensity
can change dramatically in a matter of hours. Everyone should
obey their local governments’ recommendations to evacuate if
that is what is suggested. By knowing well in advance where
local shelters are set up people will know what is allowed
to be taken to the shelter. It is suggested that showing up
with food, water, and blankets is a minimum as they may not
be set up to provide them. The most important thing with shelters
is that they are providing a place that is safer to stay in
than your home. It is vital to bring enough food for your family
that will last for at least three to seven days. This food
should include non-perishable packaged or canned food, snack
food, non-electric can opener, cooking tools and fuel, paper
plates and plastic utensils.
