What Does Non-Profit Debt Consolidation Mean?

When considering debt consolidation, you will notice many offers from for profit as well as non-profit debt consolidation companies. There is a significant difference between the two. The obvious is that the non-profit companies don't make any profit from your debt consolidation loan, or so it would seem. A lot of companies who claim to be non-profit do so to help you feel secure in trusting them for a good deal on a debt consolidation loan. Unfortunately, this can make it really hard for you to really know whether or not a debt consolidation company is really non-profit or not.

First of all the qualifying factors under the 501(C) 3 are very vague and hard to define. This statute in the tax laws basically makes non-profit organizations something that is considered a charitable organization that means it helps the underprivileged and/or poor. This makes it a lot easier for corporations to slip through loopholes and the like. These debt consolidation companies can claim to be non-profit as long as they don't make any money. Yet this doesn't mean that employees can't make salaries, because this is part of normal operating costs. Because employees can make salaries, they can be invested in pressuring you into a debt consolidation loan, even if they claim to be part of a non-profit debt consolidation company.

The thing about non-profit debt consolidation companies is that they require a donation in order to keep their operating costs down. This donation covers the employee’s salaries. Of course this “donation” isn't really one at all, because it is automatically deducted by calculating a certain percentage or through a flat fee every month, in this case you could have no choice in paying more by using a non-profit company. Of course a lot of people may tell you that using a non-profit debt consolidation company is the easiest and best way to go when it comes to debt consolidation. This could be true if you are careful about which one you choose. By researching other people's experience with the non-profit debt consolidation company you can find out which one can work the best for you.

A small advantage of using a non-profit debt consolidation company is that for some people the fact they are free or of minimal cost can be a huge benefit. If you take into consideration all costs and find this fact to still be an advantage, using a non-profit debt consolidation company could be good for your personal needs. Of course, if you end up paying in extra fees that are added as donations to your monthly payments, then the advantages are completely nullified. As you can see taking in all these considerations can be confusing and hard to understand. This is why the fact that the definition of a non-profit organization, including non-profit debt consolidation companies, need to be more clearly defined then they are at this time. This is also why a lot of people find it easy to trust them, yet don't realize that they are worthy of just as much trust as those that aren't non-profit, which isn't saying much. Sometimes they can't be trusted very much at all. They tend to take advantage of those who think they have nothing to lose if someone doesn't come to them for a loan, when actually they do.

Being prudent in choosing a debt consolidation company is probably the best way you can avoid the mistake of trusting a non-profit debt consolidation company that will just take you for a ride in the long run. Make sure you check with the Better Business Bureau and check their lists of non-profit organizations as well, because this can help you in finding one that is honest, because any complaints that have been filed will be found by checking with them. Now that you are more fully aware of constitutes a non-profit debt consolidation company you are more able to see how they could easily take advantage of those who aren't careful or who aren't aware. Also, you will be better able to be aware of the tricks of some of these so-called non-profit debt consolidation companies and not get taken in by them.

Don't misunderstand, not all non-profit debt consolidation companies are looking to take advantage of people, but because of loopholes and those who would be dishonest, it makes it a lot easier for them to be, so please remember to be careful.
