I Want To Get Rid
Of My Debt...NOW!
What
Can Credit Counseling Do To My Credit History?
You have some debt and are looking into receiving
credit counseling, but do you really know how it can affect
you and your credit? Do you realize that credit counseling,
though helping you, can also have some negative effects on
your credit as well?
Many people do not realize this and are not fully aware of
why this happens. If you are serious about getting credit counseling,
you should take a look at some of the ways it might affect
your credit report. Of course, the whole concept of credit
counseling revolves around the idea of improving your credit
score and improving your overall credit report. In the end
this may be true. This is because it works to help eliminate
your creditors and credit cards altogether. It also aims to
eliminate revolving credit and making sure your current creditors
are getting paid on time. If you are the responsible and hard
working type, this can work for you and can affect your score
positively in time.
What happens when you go to credit counseling generally involves
them having you hand over all your credit cards and providing
a complete financial history to the credit counseling company.
Though they will generally leave you with one credit card for
emergencies, it is always best to be very careful with it.
They will also draw up a three or four year plan to make you
debt free and a way to achieve this. They will also offer you
means of helping you get there.
Now this sounds all good and well, does it not? Well to be
sure, when you take this step, you will receive an
entry on your credit report of “DMP” or “Credit counseling”, in this
way your credit report will reflect the help you are getting,
whether you like that or not, something to consider for sure.
The reason this entry is made is because they want to make
sure that you do not apply for any new credit cards during
this time that you are trying to fix your credit. Once you've
completed the program, they are generally very good about changing
or removing the entry to update your situation.
In a way having this entry on your report can affect your
credit report if you are not careful or aware that it is there.
Otherwise, you could end up applying for credit and being denied,
therefore adversely affecting your credit score, by racking
up numerous rejections on your credit report. Because any rejection
of credit effects your credit score negatively you must be
aware that the credit counseling company will put this on your
report and be willing to commit to being responsible in how
you handle this. You also must be very careful and verify that
the credit counseling company has removed this entry from your
report when you are done, otherwise you could go to apply for
credit and be denied because the entry has not been removed.
This can also lead you to messing up your credit.
You
should also do some investigating of the company you are
to use before you use them. You want to try to get recommendations
from previous customers in how well the company was about paying
the payments on time. Since you are not paying for the debts
directly you are depending on the credit counseling company
to pay your bills for you, on time. A good credit counseling
company will pay promptly, as long as you are prompt with your
payment, it is up to them to be prompt with the rest of it.
This of course can greatly affect your credit report if they
are not on time paying for you; this is why it is extremely
important you find out as much as you can about the company
ahead of time. If you are willing to do this, it is definitely
worth it.
As you can see it can take some hard work and discipline to
get the best deal out of a credit counseling company. If you
want to make sure that your credit history isn't negatively
affected it can take a lot to make sure of this. Of course
those in these situations usually aren't gifted in these areas,
but it is worth it to get you out of this situation while avoiding
consolidation or bankruptcy. Once you are debt free, you will
be glad you did.
