How Budgeting Can Lower Expenses and Pay Off Debt

Do you know how much money comes into your checking account every month? Do you know how much money you spend each month? If so, you have the makings for a great budget! Take a look at the budget ideas for lowering expenses and paying off debt, and perhaps after today you might be on the road to debt-free living!

Break down budget items further – you might be surprised how much money you can save!

If you have a working budget, then you probably also have a monthly allowance for groceries, eating out, and other assorted items. Break down your line items for groceries and eating out further. How much money do you spend eating out every week? Perhaps instead of buying lunch from the cafeteria each day, you could pack a lunch a few days a week? If you pay $3.50 each day for your lunch, during the course of a workweek you are spending $17.50. In one month, you would be spending $70! What would happen if you only bought lunch three days a week? This would cost $10.50 per week, or $42 per month, which saves you a whopping $28! What could you do with that $28? If you carry a credit card with a balance of about $1,000 at about 17% interest, then your monthly payment would be about $20. You could pay this credit card bill and a little extra simply by reducing your monthly spending on lunches. And since you only give up two lunches a week at the cafeteria, it does not appear like such a huge sacrifice in the first place. What a great way to clear up a budget line item without needing additional income!

Take the guesswork out of fluctuating charges.

You are probably paying some utilities. Maybe you own a home and you have to pay for your gas, water and sewer, trash pickup, and electricity. Maybe you are a renter and you only have to worry about your electricity. Whatever the case may be, utilities can wreak havoc with a budget. Electricity in the summer may be extremely high: after all, you might have the air conditioner running pretty much all the waking hours of the day. In the winter the bill can be so small as to give you a false sense of security that you can take on additional debt since you have some free money in the budget. To take the guess work out of your budget and to help you stay on track year round, contact your utility company and ask to be put on a level payment plan. The utility company will take a look at your account, average out how much money you roughly spend each month, and then allow you to pay this amount year round. At the end of a year you may either receive a lower bill to make up for any overages you paid, or a slightly higher one to catch any monies you did not pay.

Work with the IRS’ set of rules.

If you are a homeowner, you are probably itemizing your taxes. Plan to add further tax deductions to your forms. Usually you can do this in the form of itemizations - by setting apart a bit of money each month for charitable contributions to churches, organizations, or other funds of your choice. In lieu of money you also consider donating an unused car, clothes, household goods, or other furnishings. Keep good records, and then get more money back from Uncle Sam when the next tax season rolls around. Your tax refund can then be used to pay down on some of your debt.

Follow the snowball principle.

This idea has received a lot of press in the recent years. The idea is to list your credit card debts in the order from the lowest to the highest. First you concentrate on paying of the credit card with the lowest balance. Once this is achieved and the card is paid off, you apply the money that you would have normally paid to that creditor to the next lowest outstanding balance in addition to the amount you are already paying toward it. The idea is to pay off more and more debt, and then having a snowballing effect of having larger sums go to paying off the remaining outstanding debts.

Click here if you are drowning in credit card debt, facing foreclosure, being harassed my debt collectors or simply feel like a victim of this economic crisis. It's my SolveYourProblem recommendation.
