Become Debt Free By Christmas!

Blame it on the Christian conception of benevolence, or the myth about Santa Claus, or the accumulated perception regarding Christmas spirit, or the fear of being labeled as a Scrooge… but Christmas marks the season when we have to extend our budgets to the limit so that we could prepare presents for the people closest and dearest to us, as well as those whom we know are expecting us to show them some holiday loving.

Distributing gifts is actually a very fulfilling experience. Shopping for someone else is a refreshing change of pace, and we would all realize the sheer happiness involved in making someone feel some joy.

Indeed, Christmas is the season of seasons!

Sadly, the mark it would leave on our pockets is not something worth celebrating as the other aspects of Christmas. If we spend carelessly, we will discover that Christmas can drain our budgets dry, and the season does so with more efficacy than other holidays.

Here are some tips on how to give love on Christmas day without necessarily reducing your budget into ruins.

1. Make a shopping list. By preparing what you need to buy beforehand, you would be able to easily avoid any unnecessary expenditure once you go to the malls to purchase the items you want to give away. Budget planning revolves around the concept of “planning,” after all. Without a plan, you might just end up using your credit card with reckless abandon.

2. Prepare a hierarchy of gifts. On the first group are your family members. On the second group are your friends. On the third group are special people whom you just want to show some care and kindness. Naturally, the first group would need more special, and sometimes even more costly, presents. The second group is a notch lower, understandably. And so on and so forth. This would help you prioritize, and would result in an effective distribution of the budget you have allotted for the holidays.

3. Canvass. There are always better deals somewhere. Do not settle for the first item you see. Chances are, it will be sold for a lower price somewhere else. Your savings may only amount to a couple of dollars. But with all the gifts you will purchase, they would accumulate to some substantial savings for you.

4. Do not spend more than what you could afford. The common problem that people encounter during the holidays is that their love overpowers their budget. This shouldn’t be the case. Love can be shown in a variety of ways other than purchasing the most expensive gifts. So consider only the things that you know would not compromise your financial abilities. And compensate with any possible deficiency in terms of creative means, like a home-made card for example, or a letter that comes straight from the heart.

5. Remember that you’re not obligated to give gifts to EVERYBODY. Much as we would want to shower everyone we know with some Christmas love, this is quite impossible and impractical. Surely, there’s someone who knows you who wouldn’t give you a present. It’s just the way things go. And there is no shame to it. Everyone understands the financial demands in this day and age. Besides, what you cannot give in kind, you could most certainly extend with the warmest smile and the kindest good deed.

Christmas has been chastised by many sectors as a rather commercialized holiday, where premium is given to the material rather than the spirit behind things. You don’t have to get swayed by what is commonly practiced. Surely, you could celebrate a budget-friendly Christmas without sacrificing the real meaning behind the season.
