How To Lose Your Crutch & Face Reality
Your new found sobriety can be overwhelming
to say the least. Previous habits are no longer acceptable
in your new life. You may find yourself with a lot of free
time and also extra money that was previously spent on your
prior habits. The key is to use the time wisely as temptation
is lurking in the shadows.
Changing
the places you go and the people you surround yourself
with have to be changed from the prior activities.
To return to your old stomping grounds would put an
unreasonable burden on your
quest for sobriety. New places and new faces are the orders
of the day. You are most vulnerable when you are idle.
So finding
things that you enjoy to keep you occupied increases your chance
of continued success.
To
continue in a group session is very helpful to some at this
point. Discussing the urges and feelings you may have
with those of like mind is very positive and supportive. If
temptation arises, as it will, just remind yourself of
the miserable state you were once in. Recall the shame and
regret of your past discrepancies. Talk to your friends or
whatever support vehicle you may have in order to get you through.
If you do not have this, then there are numbers you can call
to discuss the issues with someone who’s intent is to help
you.
You can open a dialogue in one of the countless forums available
on the internet. Just keep in mind that help is out there.
It may be a phone call or an email or a forum discussion. But
it is there. You are not alone and you have already suffered
through the worst part. Be proud of that and give yourself
some much deserved credit.
