Addiction:
How Do I Become Addicted?
Regardless
of the environment you grow up in, it is never your intent
to become addicted to drugs or
alcohol. There are many different factors that come into play
in order for you to become a victim of substance abuse.
Your surroundings play a large part in the acceptance of drugs
and alcohol in your life. Growing up in an environment where
the illicit substances are not a factor lessens the chances
of being introduced to the bad habit.
This
is not
to say it does not happen, but the chances are much less
than if you are around the activity on a regular basis. Peer
pressure, wanting to be like adults, dealing with life stressors are
leading factors involved in becoming addicted. The addiction
does not
happen overnight either. It is nurtured over a period of time.
Usage increases as it replaces something in your persona
that is lacking. It could be loneliness or just trying to be
cool and fit in with the crowd. It could be the inability to
face a certain aspect of reality.
Regardless
of the reason, the results are usually the same. Your dependence
grows and your life centers around the next high.
Friends and family try to help initially, but soon shy away
when you are considered beyond help. All of your planned activities
are based on getting high. That is first and foremost in your
life.
This activity leaves you with a very empty feeling inside
and you know that it’s all wrong. But you still continue along
the same path each and every day. At this point it is imperative
to admit your problem to yourself and seek assistance to get
your life back on track.
