Recovery – Forgive Yourself Then Ask For Forgiveness
One of the hardest things for an addict to
deal with is the feeling of not being accepted in society.
A feeling of shame and guilt seem to override all thoughts
at the beginning of recovery. This thought also prevails when
addicts admit to themselves that they do in fact have a problem.
The aspect of not being able to fit in may keep them off the
road to recovery.
Understand
that during the time spent as an addict was a time of lost
control. You may have done things that you would
never do with a clear mind. The feeling of guilt can be a great
hindrance to being able to cope with the transition to being
straight. Facing the ghosts of your past can be totally overwhelming.
The first step is to forgive yourself…only then can you ask
for forgiveness from others.
Failure to take the necessary steps mentally to step back
into society will almost assure your return to the previous
addiction. Family will forgive you, as will true friends. The
ones that do not are the ones that were using you in that previous
state of mind. In order to promote their own agenda, they supported
your demise in the world of darkness.
Once your mind is clear and you have overcome the crutch then
family and friends will recognize your return. They will welcome
the person they once knew and loved. This is the support needed
in order for a successful return to the norm.
Be
very careful, walk the line, and do not fall back into old
habits. If you choose to go back to the same environment,
you are stacking the deck against yourself. You must find new
friends. A new click is needed to keep your mind off the habit.
I am speaking of the friends made in the addiction phase, not
the previous genuine friends made throughout your life.
BTW…Welcome back, good to see you again.
If you happen to slip along the way, do not give up. Call
your sponsor or case worker. Call a friend or a relative. Anything
to get back on the path to recovery.
