Addiction
- The Experimental Phase
Growing
up and trying to be one of the “big boys” is a part of every
youth’s life. Some choose athletics,
some academics and others choose to hang out with the “cool”
crowd. Unfortunately, this can be the beginning of the “Experimental
Phase”. It can be the beginning of a substance abuse problem.
Everyone
has experienced the desire to alter their minds in some way. When you were young, did you not spin around in circles
until completely dizzy? The curiosity of this mental state
overcomes us all at some point. Some leave it at that and others
take it further. The cool or rebellious crowd tend to eat
the poison apple and try things that have been forbidden
by whatever authority figure is there at the time.
They
continue the quest to find out what it is all about. It all
starts as innocent as spinning around, but then
progresses to bigger and better mind altering things. There
are countless ways for a young person to get high. The creativity
used in finding those things is amazing at times. If the same
amount of effort was applied towards something positive, then
much could be accomplished.
One
thing leads to another and you can only hope that this person
wakes up or gets their fill of this before permanent
damage is done. Most do, in fact, grow out of this stage. Others,
though, are destined to destroy their lives and those around
them. Education at an early age of the perils of addiction
could be the answer to this continuous dilemma. This problem
has been around for many years in different forms. The names
and the substances may be different, but the plot remains the
same.
So
in essence, the issue needs to be identified at the
earliest stage possible. The only way to prevent
a substance abuse problem is to identify the triggers that
cause it to occur. This
also applies if the problem already exists.
Education and awareness of the issues is the only way to combat
this problem. Helping those in need makes things better for
all. If you know someone in this state, do what you can to
help them. You may learn something in the process.
