Your Addiction – Change Your Environment Or Else
It
happens every day. An addict goes into a program, completes
it with flying colors with full intent of
staying clean, and starts a new life. Usually the first day
out they are contacted by someone from the old crowd. "Hey,
stop by and see the gang" they are told. Upon entering the
group
environment they are immediately offered whatever substance
that they just kicked. Back to square one again.
The
only way to remain clean is to change your environment. To
go back to the same activity is almost guaranteed failure.
Your urge to go back will be strong but
there is
no logic in putting yourself back in that position. If any
of the people involved are truly your friend, then they will
understand your need to shy away from that setting at least
until you are stable in your new life. Even then it is questionable
to be in that group as their goals are no longer the same as
yours.
Make
new friends and find new activities. Go back to what you
liked to do before you became an addict. As your mind clears,
it will not be hard to find things more attractive than sitting
in a drug house or a bar wasting your life and your money.
For those who believe in God, the church is a perfect place
to spend some time.
There are also countless support groups available. If the
temptation becomes to strong, call a friend or a family member.
Call your pastor. Call your local support group. Do anything
to fight the impulse to go back. With time the temptation will
grow weaker as your strength grows. With that you pride also
grows as you are back in control. Then you can look in the
mirror and like what you see.
