I
Want To End My Addiction NOW!
How
Does An Addiction Begin?
Booze,
pills or powders, choose your medicine.
No
one tries any of the above for the first time with the intent
of becoming addicted. Many can use them on a recreational
basis and never become addicted. Others cannot. Knowing the
difference
is a very daunting task to say the least. You may consider doing things you never would do before, such
as talking yourself into doing something you know is wrong.
Self justification consumes your thoughts. Friends and family
all notice your change of mood and habits. They ask you out
of concern if all is well. You assure them that everything
is all right. Just a phase, I will be fine. Sound familiar?
So,
a pattern has developed and each day is a new challenge
to escape from reality. Work has become an extremely volatile
situation that you feel is ready to explode at any time. You
count the moments until five o’clock so you can have a drink
to sooth the beast within. All is good now; things come into
perspective and are much easier to deal with. Hey this must
be the answer. Additional mind altering substances come to
mind. The vicious cycle has begun. Hold on…this is a rough
ride.
In
order to function at a desirable level, you must count on
some sort of crutch to get through each part of your day. This
may begin with something as innocent as strong coffee in the
morning to sleeping meds to end the evening. There are a few
stages in between that are based on the situation at hand.
This
did not happen overnight and the intent was never to end
up in this situation. How many people have you heard say
“I can quit any time I want to”… I guess they just
don’t want to. But
rest assured that your life does not have to depend on alcohol
and drugs in order to function. Many have returned from this
dilemma and you can also.
Just
remember there is support available. There are community
programs that are offered free of charge. Your local
church and clergy are always an option. On line support groups
to discuss the issues with those who have been there. Help
is there for the asking. You just have to want help and be
willing to accept it.
