Recovery Step #1 – Admit Your Problem
The
first step in kicking your habit is to admit that you have
one. I am not speaking of just standing
in front of a group and saying “I am an addict.” I am talking
about admitting to yourself that you are under the
control of a foreign substance and you want to break the hold. Many
times I have attended group meetings and listened to very compelling
stories only to see the person that told the story getting
high again as soon as they left the meeting. There is no help
for that type. It's simply lip service to get through a mandated
program. Their time will come.
When
you have reached the point of wanting to change, then help
is available. There are groups and counselors available
at no charge to those who seek assistance. The group atmosphere
is quite effective as you can here the plight of others that
are or have been in similar situations to you. You may gain
a new approach or possibly see yourself in the other participants.
All of this can be nothing but positive in your quest for sobriety.
The support of those who understand are key to your recovery.
Sharing feelings of despair and talking it out prove to be
very effective tools for the road back. You also find a bonding
effect with others in the group. Very important when temptation
arises and you need to call someone who understands.
Sharing your thoughts and listening to others help you understand
why you got to where you are. Once you understand that, then
the road back becomes much more attractive and easier to stay
on. So in essence understanding where you have been, along
with where you want to go is the key to your success.
